Okamoto says that, as many other fields in Japanese culture, architecture derives its imagery from mythology, and that is why Japanese buildings tend to have “skin” rather than facades.

 

Dragon snouts, scales, reflecting surfaces that mimic organic matter. Anywhere he walked, Okamoto moved along mythological beings, not buildings.
