The Asakusa Samba Carnival

00:00 / 01:08

People are often surprised when they learn that the biggest Japanese community outside Japan is in Brazil. Japan in turn holds the largest Brazilian carnival outside Brazil, which takes place every year on the last Saturday of August in the traditional district of Asakusa, in Tokyo.

Around 40 Japanese samba schools compete for the first prize in front of a crowd of over 500,000 attendants.

The 2019 carnival took place only two days before we opened the exhibition. But we couldn’t leave out such an event, documented by a member of the community of over 2,000,000 Brazilian nikkei.
